The urgency of transforming the way we produce and consume food has never been clearer. In response to this pressing need, the WWF Future Food Together initiative was launched, offering a fresh perspective on food systems. In September 2023, after over six years, the final project conference took place in Berlin, where we shared our journey on the road towards sustainable consumption and production in food and agriculture.
The conference brought together project team members from five Future Food Together partner countries, providing a platform for them to share their valuable insights and engage in fruitful discussions with a diverse audience. The presence of external participants from various organizations added depth to the conversations.

A Platform for Change

During this event, our colleagues offered valuable insights, presented their research findings, and shared practical experiences from their project implementation work.

In alignment with the spirit of our South-South exchange, which served as the bedrock for the exchange of knowledge and experiences between project countries, we explored several overarching themes in fireside chats. These included collaborative efforts involving a wide spectrum of stakeholders along the supply chain, encompassing consumers, smallholder farmers, and retailers. Among others, we discussed strategies aimed at mitigating food loss and waste, with a particular emphasis on the gastronomy sector, as well as enhancing consumer engagement through comprehensive information dissemination, effective communication strategies, and advocacy initiatives.

Moreover, during the gathering, we took the opportunity to exchange insights with another WWF-led project, which revolves around the critical mission of elucidating the environmental impact of food, known as the IKI Climate Impacts of Food initiative

Way Forward

The WWF Future Food Together Final Project Conference showcased the initiative’s progress and set the stage for future collaboration and action. As we look forward, the message is clear: the transformation of our food systems is not only necessary but achievable through collective efforts and a shared vision.

Starting in 2022, Future Food Together transitioned into a second phase with the project countries Thailand and Cambodia, cooperating with government departments, private businesses, farmers, and civil society to implement a series of coordinated actions aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and production practices. By collaboratively developing solutions and promoting the adoption of sustainable practices, both among consumers and producers, we perceive significant opportunities to enhance agri-food systems in Thailand and Cambodia in terms of their economic, social, and environmental performance. Find out more on our work in Cambodia here.

Together, we can shape a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for food.

Cultivating a Greener Future: Sustainable agricultural production in Mondulkiri, Cambodia

Cambodia is part of the Future Food Together Initiative since 2022, supporting the country in developing sustainable practices in food systems – from production to consumption. As one of the first project steps the team has started working with producer groups in the Mondulkiri province to expand the use of sustainable farming methods in order to secure agricultural production in the long term. The expansion of sustainable farming methods in the region not only helps safeguard the environment but also promotes resilient communities and ensures food security for future generations.
